Bristol for friends and family time, and the Harbour Festival

This weekend we broke a self-imposed six month hiatus to visit family and friends in Bristol. Since Daddy' dislocated his shoulder, making the train journey seemed too much of a challenge, as Mummy ended up being a bit of a packhorse!

We checked out the Bristol Harbour Festival, heading to Castle Park for the children's zone and BITA twin towns zone (which Alix was managing), which were by far the most chilled out and baby-friendly areas. Most importantly, got to meet our mini buggy pal Josh, little bro to Ollie, and catch up with Joby. Here we are wearing our pirate-themed tee-shirts - Gracie has one too, as we are the St Ives pirate crew!

IN OUR FIRST MONTH...

Born on the Monday, we stayed in St George's Hospital for seven days, initially at mummy's request as she wanted the support of the midwives when her milk came in on Wednesday night. When weighed on Friday, Bert had lost 12% of his body weight and so we had to stay in for a further 48 hours while we got the hang of feeding regularly; we went home when Bert gained 30g, and grandad came to collect us in his car.

On the Friday after we were born, we started to meet our family and friends; Granny (mum's mum) and Nanny (dad's mum) were our first ever visitors. While we were still in hospital we also met Grandad (dad's dad), who came with Nanny, plus aunty Lucy (dad's sister) and aunty Harriet (the eldest of mum's sisters), who both live in London. We met Grandpa and Nanny Carly (mum's dad and step-mum) once we were home from hospital, and also more aunts and uncles. We were very excited to meet our cousins Ben (5), Sophie (4) and Tom (1); Ben and Sophie gave us lovely cuddles, but Tom was too young to hold us. Their mum and dad, aunty Adele and uncle Steve, gave us a webcam so that we can keep in touch with them via Skype.

We learnt to breastfeed, helped by lots of advice, albeit often conflicting, from the midwives at the hospital. Mummy found her NCT Breastfeeding Handbook useful for consistent message, and Lansinoh pure lanolin brilliant for soothing overworked areola, as with twins there's no rest for the breast(!).

Have got the basics of feeding down, and once home, we all mastered the 'double hold' feed, a necessity for saving time. Starting off on pillows, we then progressed onto a 'Widgey' croissant-shaped pillow, which was really designed for single babies so no good for us, and then onto the ultimate breastfeeding cushion for twins - the EZ 2Nurse - which is mummy's single most useful purchase ever. She bought the foam one and the blow-up travel version from Twins UK and has never looked back!

At two weeks old, we ventured on the London Underground - one stop, from Tooting Broadway to Colliers Wood - to visit Merton Abbey Mills by the River Wandle, and in our first month we also went on the bus for the first time, alighting via the back doors as those buses are not designed for double buggies, despite having one of the most compact on the market - the Maclaren Twin Techno.

Moving further afield, at four weeks old we travelled to the Isle of Wight to visit Great-Granny Ashdown, our Granny's mum. Granny came to London and drove us, with mummy and daddy, down to Lake via the Southampton car ferry, and we all stayed in a caravan with GrandAl (Granny's boyfriend), uncle Stan and aunty Stella (Granny and GrandAl's children), meeting them for the first time since we were born. We also met great-aunty Heather, great-aunty Clare and great-uncle Bob.

Being our parents' babies, we also made our first trip to the pub. Only for a quick drink mind you - and mummy and daddy were on the softs, natch. Daddy took us to The Tram and Social, and mummy and daddy took us to The Long Room, both on Mitcham Road in Tooting. The Long Room has a mother and baby group on Wednesday mornings that mummy is working up the courage to check out.

Just before the end of our first month, on May 20, Bert weighed 2.8kg (6lb 3oz) and Freddie weighed 3.2kg (7lb 1oz).
